Herring decision by Fisheries Minister deserves applause

Good news for herring! Send a letter to fisheries and oceans minister today.

Federal Fisheries and Oceans Minister Joyce Murray has closed the North and Central Coast herring fishery and reduced the harvest rate for the Strait of Georgia Pacific herring fishery from 20 to 10 per cent.

The David Suzuki Foundation often criticizes government decisions, asking our supporters to urge federal minsters to do more. This time, we’re encouraging you to join us in applauding the minister’s decision to move toward an ecosystem approach to Pacific herring management.

This is one of the most important decisions for Pacific herring in the 15 years that the David Suzuki Foundation has participated in the Herring Harvest Planning Committee.

Please take a moment now to encourage the minister to continue to make science-based decisions that safeguard ecosystems and the many benefits a healthy ocean provides.
